Winter Food Program 2024–2025 (November 2024 – May 2025)

Last winter, thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the hard work of our volunteers, we were able to care for the cats of Hydra through the cold months.

• Food Distribution:
  • November, December, January, March, and April: 21 bags per month to 21 stations.
  • February: 46 bags (21 regular + 25 extra) to help the cats survive the hardest month.
  • May: 21 bags to the 21 stations.
• Total Food Distributed:
  172 high-quality bags of cat food.
• Cost to Hydra Ark:
  €7,927.53 (including VAT).

Since May 2025, we relied on pet shop box donations. Although this year donations were low, we managed to save and store food through June–October, creating about 9 sacks of 28–30 kg biscuits. These helped us restock the stations at the beginning of November 2025.

Winter Food Program 2025–2026 (November 2025 – April/May 2026)

With the start of this winter season, we are once again caring for our feline friends across Hydra.

Overview of November Activities

We began November by restocking our feeding stations with the food saved from summer donations, and we ordered 20 additional bags to ensure all stations are well supplied.

• Stations:
  • Total stations decreased from 21 to 20.
  • AEN Hill station removed: Cats moved down to the Museum area, where they find more food from passersby.

Visits and Station Updates

During our Mandraki visit, we were thrilled to see the Municipality taking an active role in supporting the cats:

• Two new feeders installed:
  1. One before Mandraki Bay
  2. One at Mandraki Bay
• Our route included:
  1. Feeding the cats at the Slaughterhouse
  2. Filling our Hydra Ark station at Stravelakis
  3. Filling the Municipality feeder at Agios Noufrios
  4. Noticing another new municipal feeder about 15 meters from our old Mandraki station
  5. At Mandraki Bay, we did not fill the new municipal feeder because it was already full

Our old Mandraki station was in poor condition. While we had planned to repair it, the proximity of the new municipal feeder meant we could remove it. This aligns with our long-standing hope that the Municipality would support stations in hard-to-reach locations—places that are challenging to reach while carrying heavy food loads.

During our visit to Avlaki and Kamini, we were also happy to see two more municipal feeders. We filled the feeder in the Avlaki area, 20 metres from the Hydra Ark feeder. We will keep our old one in place since there are many cats, and a single municipal feeder won’t be enough. The cats in the Avlaki area do not receive enough food during winter, as there are no many inhabited houses there. The municipal feeder placed after Pyrofani was full.

We continued to the Kavouras station, which was also full thanks to the SAR volunteers, and then visited the Ypapanti colony, where we fed the cats.

We will share updates from the other locations soon. 

Why municipal support matters: It’s a huge relief and a joy to see the Municipality stepping in. We hope that eventually, all stations will be supported municipally, ensuring that every cat has access to food, even in the most remote spots. Of course, Hydra Ark and SAR volunteers will continue to refill both our stations and municipal feeders whenever we can.

Future Plans

• We plan to repair and relocate the old Mandraki station to a safer, more practical spot.
• Maintaining our wooden stations is getting harder:
  • Costs are increasing
  • Finding skilled repairers is challenging
  • Recruiting volunteers for winter refills is difficult, especially with bad weather and Hydra’s logistical challenges (no vehicles for transporting supplies)

Looking ahead: If maintaining our wooden stations becomes too difficult, we may need to replace them with durable feeder houses similar to the municipal ones. While this requires investment, it will ensure the cats are cared for sustainably and safely.

Partnership with SAR

We are deeply grateful to SAR and their amazing volunteers: President Popi Zogkou and Secretary Kalli Kokkou. They have taken responsibility of 10 stations this winter.

• Hydra Ark will support them with 10 bags of food per month starting November (bags will be delivered tomorrow due to a delay).
• Another 10 bags were distributed across 8 stations, and 2 new volunteers were assigned to Upper Hydra and the Cohen area.
• The 10th station, once repaired, will be placed where it’s most needed in consultation with SAR and Mrs. Popi.

New House at Kourmada

We are happy to report a new house was installed for the cats at Kourmada. Both the cats and we are deeply grateful to the donors who made this possible!

Supplies and Orders

• 10 bags purchased from Pet Area pet shop
• 10 bags purchased from Healthy Pets pet shop
• 20 bags ordered for December from local pet shops (supporting local business is part of our mission, and we are grateful for your support)

November has been a month of progress, gratitude, and hope. Despite the challenges of winter, transport, and logistics, Hydra Ark volunteers, SAR volunteers, and the Municipality are ensuring that the cats of Hydra are fed, safe, and cared for.

Municipal support is essential, and we hope it continues to expand so that even the hardest-to-reach areas are reliably covered. If our wooden stations cannot be maintained in the future, we will invest in durable, long-lasting feeders to keep every cat safe and nourished.

What a Cat Needs in Order to Travel

1. Microchip Identification — The cat must be microchipped and registered under the adopter’s name.

2. EU Pet Passport — Issued by a licensed vet and includes the microchip number and vaccination records.

3. Rabies Vaccination — Must be administered at least 21 days before travel.

4. Health Certificate — Usually issued a few days before departure by an authorized veterinarian.

5. Internal and External Deworming — Treatments must be up-to-date and recorded in the passport.

6. Import Requirements of the Destination Country — Some countries (e.g., the UK, Norway, Switzerland) have specific additional regulations.

7. Approved Travel Carrier — For air travel, you must also confirm with the airline that they accept pets.

Important Notes

• We are unable to escort cats to Athens or to another country.

• We cannot cover any travel expenses for the cat. In some cases, we can cover vet’s expenses or part of them.

• As there is the possibility that the cat is privately owned (not a stray), please send a photo and the exact location. Many privately owned cats on Hydra roam freely and may be mistaken for strays.

In the spirit of transparency and gratitude, Hydra Ark proudly presents a comprehensive overview of our actions throughout the year 2024, marking a year of relentless efforts toward the well-being of the island’s feline residents.

Food for Cats’ Stations (January 2024 to December 2024):

• January, February, March, April: 84 bags = €3,527.88
• November, December 2024: 42 bags = €2,095.70

Feeding Program

The purpose of the food stations is to provide cat biscuits during the winter months to help stray cats survive when the island is largely uninhabited. From spring onwards, with tavernas, restaurants, and homes reopening, the cats can find food more easily.

To sustain the 21 food stations currently in place, we need at least 42 bags of cat food per month (2 bags per station). Ideally, to meet the full needs, we would require 63 bags per month (3 bags per station). This amounts to a significant financial burden each month. Unfortunately, due to limited funds and available manpower, we are only able to supply 21 bags per month in 2024, which is just enough to help the cats survive through winter. For 2025, we will continue to supply 21 bags per month, but we will purchase additional bags if we have the financial capacity in the coming months.

We strive to fill the stations as quickly as possible, based on our financial capacity and the availability of volunteers. The feeding effort typically begins at the end of October and lasts until April. Additionally, we hire a worker to maintain the food stations and repair the shelters as needed. Despite our best efforts, we are unable to do more, much as we wish we could. Hydra poses unique challenges—there are no vehicles, and the island has vast areas to cover. The rising cost of cat food and our dwindling funds exacerbate the issue.

We are also in need of more volunteers. Many of our current helpers have limited time due to work commitments, and most of them are women who may lack the physical strength required for this demanding task. We kindly remind everyone that animal charities rely on volunteers who dedicate their free time—and often their own money—to causes like this.

We deeply regret that we cannot provide more food to the stations or set up additional food stations around the island at this time.

TNR Sessions and Other Actions for 2024

• 61 cats were sterilized, treated with anti-parasites, microchipped, and registered with the Municipality of Hydra.
• TNR total in euros for 21 cats covered by Hydra Ark: €1,444.10
• 40 cats: Expenses covered by Let’s Be Smart
• 12 cats received treatment at a vet’s clinic in Athens. All expenses were covered by Hydra Ark.
• Treatments, surgeries, medicines, and hospitalizations: €2,795.28
• 100 cats were treated with anti-parasites, thanks to the generous donation of Mrs. Monica Taylor.
• 4 cats were adopted: 2 in the UK, 1 in France, and 1 in Sweden. A big thank you to Siofra, Marie, and Louise for giving lovely homes to Hydra’s stray cats!
• Repairs and maintenance of the wooden constructions of the food stations and shelters: €500

On Monday, March 7, 2024, veterinarian George Karatheopoulos and his team arrived on Hydra to neuter stray cats: 15 females and 6 males. A total of 21 cats from Mandraki were neutered and spayed. All cats received anti-parasite treatment, were microchipped, and were registered with the Municipality of Hydra. The total cost of operations, including VAT, amounted to €1,244.16. Additional expenses, including VAT, were €55 for vet transport, €5 for coffee, and €139.94 for TNR supplies, bringing the grand total to €1,444.10. All expenses were covered by Hydra Ark.

In May 2024, Hydra Ark collaborated with Let’s Be Smart to organize a TNR event. 40 cats were spayed and neutered by Lazaros Karanasios and 3 veterinary interns from the USA.

Other

In November 2024, two pallets of wet cat food were generously donated to us and the cats of Hydra by LBS. On Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, we distributed them (about 140 boxes) to volunteers and the people of Hydra in collaboration with our fellow charity, SAR Hydra.

A big thank you to all!

On November 15th, 2024, we received a donation of 15 bags of dry food for the stray cats of our island from the Municipality of Hydra. These bags were used to fill the stations in November and December.

In November and December, we organized two book-swapping events. We came together to chat, meet fellow book lovers, raised €40 from donations, and made a positive impact for animals in need.

New Goals for Hydra Ark (2025)

For 2025, Hydra Ark aims to implement as many sterilizations, health care, feeding, and vaccination/de-parasitizing programs for cats as possible.

Winter months are very difficult for both us and the stray cats. The island empties of visitors, and the challenges of caring for stray animals increase. Our financial resources are limited, and the constantly rising cost of food makes it harder to meet the full feeding needs. For example, each feeding station requires approximately three bags of food per month to cover daily feeding, but our resources do not allow us to meet this demand. Currently, the 21 bags we provide each month for the 21 feeding stations are only enough for the bare survival of the animals.

Additionally, the lack of sufficient volunteers during the winter months, when conditions on the island become harsher, makes it more difficult to transport and distribute food to the feeding stations. Most of our members who remain on the island are women, and for many of them, the physical strain of transporting food and water is a significant challenge, especially when health issues are involved.

In our plans, we aim to send specific proposals and requests to the City Council regarding the management of stray animals, as their numbers continue to rise. We believe that through collaboration, we can find sustainable solutions to ensure the well-being of these animals and improve their daily lives.

Πρόγραμμα Σίτισης
Ο σκοπός των σταθμών τροφής (ταΐστρες) είναι να παρέχουν τροφη κατά τη διάρκεια των χειμερινών μηνών, βοηθώντας τις αδέσποτες γάτες να επιβιώσουν όταν το νησί έχει λιγοτερους κάτοικους. Από την άνοιξη και μετά, με την επαναλειτουργία των ταβερνών, εστιατορίων και το άνοιγμα των σπιτιών, οι γάτες μπορούν να βρουν τροφή πιο εύκολα. Για να διατηρηθούν οι 21 σταθμοί τροφής που υπάρχουν αυτή τη στιγμή, χρειαζόμαστε τουλάχιστον 42 σακιά τροφής για γάτες κάθε μήνα (2 σακιά ανά σταθμό). Ιδανικά, για να καλυφθούν πλήρως οι ανάγκες, θα χρειαζόμασταν 63 σακιά το μήνα (3 σακιά ανά σταθμό). Αυτό αποτελεί μια σημαντική οικονομική επιβάρυνση κάθε μήνα. Η Ύδρα παρουσιάζει μοναδικές προκλήσεις—δεν υπάρχουν οχήματα, και το νησί έχει εκτεταμένες περιοχές να καλυφθούν. Η αυξανόμενη τιμή της τροφής για γάτες και οι περιορισμένοι μας πόροι επιδεινώνουν το πρόβλημα. Χρειαζόμαστε επίσης περισσότερους εθελοντές. Πολλοί από τους υπάρχοντες εθελοντές έχουν περιορισμένο χρόνο λόγω επαγγελματικών υποχρεώσεων και οι περισσότεροι από αυτούς είναι γυναίκες, οι οποίες μπορεί να μην διαθέτουν τη σωματική δύναμη που απαιτείται για αυτή την απαιτητική δουλειά. Θυμίζουμε σε όλους ότι οι φιλανθρωπικές οργανώσεις για τα ζώα βασίζονται σε εθελοντές που αφιερώνουν τον ελεύθερο χρόνο τους—και συχνά τα δικά τους χρήματα—σε σκοπούς σαν κι αυτόν. Λυπούμαστε βαθιά που δεν μπορούμε να προσφέρουμε περισσότερη τροφή στους σταθμούς ή να εγκαταστήσουμε επιπλέον σταθμούς τροφής γύρω από το νησί αυτή τη στιγμή.

Συνεδρίες TNR και Άλλες Δράσεις για το 2024

• 4 γάτες υιοθετήθηκαν: 2 στη Μ. Βρετανία, 1 στη Γαλλία και 1 στη Σουηδία. Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στη Σιόφρα, τη Μαρί, και τη Λουίζ για τα υπέροχα σπίτια που προσέφεραν στις αδέσποτες γάτες της Ύδρας!
• Επισκευές και συντήρηση των ξύλινων κατασκευών των σταθμών τροφής και των καταφυγίων: 500 €

Στις 7 Μαρτίου 2024, ο κτηνίατρος Γιώργος Καραθεοδωρόπουλος και η ομάδα του ήρθαν στην Ύδρα για να στειρώσουν αδέσποτες γάτες: 15 θηλυκές και 6 αρσενικές. Συνολικά 21 γάτες από το Μανδράκι στειρώθηκαν. Όλες οι γάτες έλαβαν θεραπεία για παράσιτα, καταχωρήθηκαν στο Δήμο Ύδρας και τους τοποθετήθηκαν  microchip. Το συνολικό κόστος των επεμβάσεων, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του ΦΠΑ, ανήλθε σε 1.244,16 €. Πρόσθετα έξοδα, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του ΦΠΑ, ήταν 55 € για τη μεταφορά του κτηνιάτρου, 5 € για καφέ και 139,94 € για προμήθειες TNR, φέρνοντας το συνολικό ποσό στα 1.444,10 €. Άλλες Δράσεις

• Νοέμβριος 2024: Δύο παλέτες υγρής τροφής για γάτες δωρήθηκαν γενναιόδωρα από το LBS για τις γάτες της Ύδρας. Στις 13 Νοεμβρίου 2024, τις διανείμαμε (περίπου 140 κουτιά) στους εθελοντές και στους κατοίκους της Ύδρας σε συνεργασία με την  φιλοζωική οργάνωση SAR Hydra. Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ σε όλους!
• 15 Νοεμβρίου 2024: Λάβαμε δωρεά 15 σακιών ξηράς τροφής για τις αδέσποτες γάτες του νησιού από το Δήμο Ύδρας. Αυτά τα σακιά χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για να γεμίσουν τους σταθμούς τον Νοέμβριο και τον Δεκέμβριο. Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στο Δήμο Ύδρας και ιδιαίτερα στη Αντιδήμαρχο  κα Μαίρη Κατσικά.

Νέοι Στόχοι για την Hydra Ark (2025)
Για το 2025, η Hydra Ark στοχεύει στην υλοποίηση όσων περισσότερων στειρώσεων, φροντίδας υγείας, προγραμμάτων σίτισης και εμβολιασμών/αποπαρασιτώσεων για γάτες είναι δυνατόν.

Οι χειμερινοί μήνες είναι πολύ δύσκολοι τόσο για εμάς όσο και για τις αδέσποτες γάτες. Το νησί αδειάζει από επισκέπτες, και οι προκλήσεις για τη φροντίδα των αδέσποτων ζώων αυξάνονται. Οι οικονομικοί μας πόροι είναι περιορισμένοι, και το συνεχώς αυξανόμενο κόστος της τροφής καθιστά ακόμα πιο δύσκολο να καλύψουμε τις πλήρεις ανάγκες σίτισης. Για παράδειγμα, κάθε σταθμός τροφής απαιτεί περίπου τρία σακιά τροφής το μήνα για να καλύψει τις καθημερινές ανάγκες, αλλά οι πόροι μας δεν επιτρέπουν να καλύψουμε αυτή τη ζήτηση. Αυτή τη στιγμή, τα 21 σακιά που παρέχουμε κάθε μήνα για τους 21 σταθμούς τροφής αρκούν μόνο για την επιβίωση των ζώων.

Επιπλέον, η έλλειψη επαρκών εθελοντών κατά τους χειμερινούς μήνες, όταν οι συνθήκες στο νησί γίνονται πιο δύσκολες, καθιστά ακόμα πιο δύσκολο το έργο της μεταφοράς και διανομής τροφής στους σταθμούς τροφής. Οι περισσότεροι από τα μέλη μας που παραμένουν στο νησί είναι γυναίκες, και για πολλές από αυτές η σωματική καταπόνηση της μεταφοράς τροφής και νερού είναι μια σημαντική πρόκληση, ειδικά όταν υπάρχουν και προβλήματα υγείας.

Επιστολή με  συγκεκριμένες προτάσεις και αιτημάτα έχει αποσταλεί  στο Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο σχετικά με τη διαχείριση των αδέσποτων ζώων, καθώς ο αριθμός τους συνεχώς αυξάνεται. Πιστεύουμε ότι μέσω συνεργασίας μπορούμε να βρούμε βιώσιμες λύσεις για την ευημερία αυτών των ζώων και να βελτιώσουμε την καθημερινότητά τους.

Θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε θερμά τα μέλη μας, τους εθελοντές και τους φίλους μας, οι οποίοι εργάζονται ακούραστα και εθελοντικά όλα αυτά τα χρόνια, και όλους τους δωρητές μας από κάθε γωνιά της γης!

Ευχαριστούμε τη Μαρία, τη Βαλερί, τον Αργύρη, τη Τζένιφερ και την Χριστίνα για τη βοήθειά τους στη γέμισμα των σταθμών και τοποθεσιών.

Ευχαριστούμε το SAR για την υποστήριξή τους! Τις κυρίες Ποπη Ζωγκού, Καλλιόπη Κοκκου, Δέσποινα Κυπρεου, Παυλίνα Προτεου, κύριο Μουστακαρεα.

Επίσης τις κυρίες Ειρήνη Ταβλαδορακη και Ματίνα Παυλου καθώς και την Εμμανουέλα που όλο το καλοκαίρι τροφοδοτούσε πολλά σημεία με νερό και τροφή.
