Adopting a Cat from Hydra
If you’ve fallen in love with a cat or kitten on Hydra and wish to give them a forever home, here’s how we can support you:
-
Connect you with our trusted vet in Athens
-
Provide the contact details of a reliable taxi driver who can take you to the vet and/or the airport
-
Let you know where to buy a cat carrier : You can find one at local pet shops
-
Provide a temporary health book for your cat for the ferry trip from Hydra to Piraeus
What a Cat Needs in Order to Travel
-
Microchip Identification — The cat must be microchipped and registered under the adopter’s name.
-
EU Pet Passport — Issued by a licensed vet and includes the microchip number and vaccination records.
-
Rabies Vaccination — Must be administered at least 21 days before travel.
-
Health Certificate — Usually issued a few days before departure by an authorized veterinarian.
-
Internal and External Deworming — Treatments must be up-to-date and recorded in the passport.
-
Import Requirements of the Destination Country — Some countries (e.g., the UK, Norway, Switzerland) have specific additional regulations.
-
Approved Travel Carrier — For air travel, you must also confirm with the airline that they accept pets.
Important Notes
-
We are unable to escort cats to Athens or to another country.
-
We cannot cover any travel expenses for the cat. In some cases, we can cover vet’s expenses or part of them.
- As there is the possibility that the cat is privately owned (not a stray), please send a photo and the exact location. Many privately owned cats on Hydra roam freely and may be mistaken for strays.
